Paul, Take a look at "Outboard power" in The Library for advice on this. I used a standard 4.5hp LS Mercury which, with a 3 blade prop gave me all the power I needed. I now have the excellent 5hp LS Honda (4 stroke) which is discussed in the Library article. Here on the lake we need the long shaft or the prop is constantly spinning in any kind of wave action. Personally I would not give up power for weight but I see a lot of 2hp motors around.
