1999 Shark World Cup The Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Toronto, Canada. July 18 22, 1999 Sid Dakin of the Mimico Cruising Club, Toronto, Ontario, chose the 40th Anniversary Year of the popular Shark 24 Cruiser/Racer, to regain the World Championship crown which he held for the first five consecutive years of the Championship, from 1966 through 1970. Placing 3,3,2,1,8[drop],2 and 2, against 45 competitors, in seven races over the five day Regatta at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, the legendary Shark sailor re-established his all round dominance of the Fleet with a 71/2 point lead over his nearest rival, Jack Mitchell (Bronte Harbour Yacht Club), who finished in 2nd place with 1,1,5,3,10,1 and 10[drop]. Dakin, who regularly races with his son John, clinched the Championship with three generations of his family aboard, when his grandson stepped in to replace regular crewman Julian Aziz, who was unable to sail, and he sailed his Shark "Duck Soup" #1456, to second place in the last race.
Taking the first 17 places, the Canadians dominated in the 45 strong International Fleet, which included three crews from Austria, two from Germany and two from Switzerland, all sailing "loaned" local boats, flying their own sails. Austrian Champion "Flossie" Felseker sailed "Sausa" #AUT8 to 18th place to lead the Europeans. "Bodo" Gunther, German Shark builder, placed 21st in "Kaiser Von Chin" #GER19 and Peter Harsch, the Swiss Class President, placed 32nd in "Susanna" #SUI1426 to lead their national teams.
